🎮 What Is This?

OuchRPG is an infinite hybrid text-based game where you create a character, wander into territories you definitely didn't need to enter, and make terrible decisions until you die. Then you do it again. And again. Because "just one more game" is the most honest thing about you.

Towns to visit, shops to loot, taverns to wallow in, and thousands of zones to get lost in. Quests exist if you can figure out how to find them. No plot, no NPC named Gary to give you emotional closure. Just you, six classes, and the unrelenting cruelty of probability.

⚔️ How Do You Play?

Create a hero — Six classes, each with their own brand of suffering. Choose wisely, or don't. Either way, it's fine.
Explore zones — Every zone has monsters, traps, items, or all three. Zones are generated infinitely. Towns offer shops, taverns, and the illusion of safety. You will never see the end of the world. You will, however, see many deaths.
Equip stuff — Armor, weapons, shields, and rings. Some help. Some hurt you more than the monsters do.
Level up — It's an RPG. You get XP. You level up. It's not enough. You'll know it's not enough when the goblin laughs at you or you step into the Arcane Wastes.
Die — You will die. The game doesn't care. It was designed this way.

☁️ Cloud Saves & Login

Log in with Google or Facebook to save your heroes to the cloud. Because losing your level 12 wizard to a browser cache clear is the kind of tragedy that makes you question all your life choices. Cloud saves sync automatically when you save — no manual uploading required. You're welcome.

🧙 The Six Classes

🛡️ Disgruntled Guard — Hits things hard. The "I'll just press Attack" class. Surprisingly effective when you stop overthinking.
🔮 Dropout Wizard — Glass cannon with a personality disorder. High INT, low CON, zero chill. Your spells will either end the fight or end you.
🏹 Lost Poacher — The "I'm different because I use a bow" class. WIS-based feats, decent survivability, and an unhealthy attachment to forests.
✨ Stressed Apothecary with a Mace — The mom of the group. Heals, tanks, and judges your life choices simultaneously. Holy damage is just regular damage with better PR.
🗡️ Pickpocket on Probation — High DEX, low morality. Backstabs are just regular stabs with extra steps. Critical hits feel like cheating because they are.
🎵 Out-of-Work Busker — Charms people. Fights when necessary. Both parties are confused. The real weapon is spite, not the lute.

🤖 AI Disclaimer

This game was built with the assistance of generative AI during development — not at runtime.

Content — Room descriptions, enemy names, item descriptions, and biome flavor text were authored with AI assistance and stored as static configuration. Nothing is generated live.
Art — Game illustrations (header image, logo) were generated using an AI image model (ComfyUI / flux-dev).
Code — The game engine (PHP/JavaScript) was developed with AI pair programming assistance.

At runtime, OuchRPG does not call any AI APIs or generate content dynamically. All content is deterministic and pre-authored. World generation uses a seeded PRNG that produces the same room for the same coordinates, selecting from fixed pools of names, descriptors, enemies, and items. No LLM, no generative model, and no external AI service runs during gameplay.

📜 A Note on Balance

Nothing in this game is balanced. The developers feel this is a feature, not a bug. If you disagree, you're right. We don't care. You can submit feedback if you want to, but we've read it all and we're just going to sit here and smirk.

🗺️ Biomes

The world is divided into 6 biomes that grow harder the farther you travel from Crossroads. Each biome has unique enemies, loot, and a boss or two to test your strength. Difficulty determines enemy stat scaling and loot rarity; Encounters is the chance of finding an enemy per move. Biomes 3 (Crystal Caverns and Forgotten Ruins) share the same distance range — you'll find both.

💡 Enemy stats scale with distance: base × (1 + (difficulty − 1) × 0.15). Arcane Wastes enemies start at 1.75× — a Void Stalker (ATK 18) hits like ATK 31 right at the biome border.

Apothecaries shine in the Forgotten Ruins (most undead are weak to ☀️ Sacred Flame). Arcane Wastes is the hardest biome — elementals resist common damage types and have high stats. Bring the right weapons.

☠️ Boss Fights

Tier-4 bosses are the most dangerous enemies in the world. Each has unique special abilities that trigger on cooldown during combat:

🌳 Ancient Treant (Forest, Arcane Wastes) — Root Bind: Damage + Root (−DEX for 2 turns). Seed Barrage: 3 hits of area damage.
🐉 Ancient Dragon (Mountains, Arcane Wastes) — Inferno Breath: Massive fire damage + Burn DoT (3 turns).
👑 Lich Lord Malachar (Ruins, Arcane Wastes) — Soul Drain: Damage + heals for half the amount.
👑 Lich King Azaroth (Ruins) — Soul Siphon: Drain life. Army of the Dead: 4 hits of undead energy.
🐍 World Serpent Jörmungandr (Swamp, Arcane Wastes) — Constrict: Damage + −DEX for 3 turns.

🎒 Inventory & Gear

Take items: Click items in the event log, or type take [item]
Equip: Weapons and Armor from inventory. Replaces currently equipped gear.
Use: Potions and consumables are used instantly.
Maps: Click "View" to open an interactive fantasy-style map of your explored landmarks. Multiple maps can coexist, each charting a different day's discoveries.
Drop: Remove unwanted items from your pack.
Unequip: Click ✕ on paperdoll slots to return gear to inventory.

🛡️ Armor System (v2.0)

D&D 5e-style AC. Non-proficient armor = −5 penalty, no DEX bonus.

Unarmored: 10 + floor(DEX÷4)
Cloth (Mage Robes, Vestments): Unarmored AC + flat DEF bonus. Any class can wear.
Light Armor: Base AC + full DEX bonus. Disgruntled Guard/Lost Poacher/Pickpocket on Probation/Stressed Apothecary with a Mace/Out-of-Work Busker proficient.
Medium Armor: Base AC + capped DEX bonus. Disgruntled Guard/Lost Poacher/Pickpocket on Probation/Stressed Apothecary with a Mace proficient.
Heavy Armor: Flat AC (no DEX). Disgruntled Guard/Lost Poacher proficient.
Shields: Add +1 to +4 AC. All classes except Out-of-Work Busker and Dropout Wizard can use shields.

Accessories (head, feet, necklace, rings) add flat DEF on top of your armor AC.

⚔️ Weapon Proficiency

Using a weapon type your class isn't proficient with imposes −2 to hit rolls and −1 ATK:

Disgruntled Guard: All types (melee, ranged, staff, wand, mace)
Lost Poacher: melee, ranged, staff, mace
Pickpocket on Probation: melee, ranged, wand
Dropout Wizard: staff, wand only
Stressed Apothecary with a Mace: mace, staff only
Out-of-Work Busker: melee, ranged, wand, staff

🎯 Utility Skills

8 skills checked via d20 + bonus vs DC. Bonus = floor(stat÷3) + (proficient ? +5 : 0) + floor(level÷2).

👟 Fancy Footwork (DEX, DC 12) — Dodge in combat (+5 DEF for 1 turn), or heal outside combat
💥 Rough & Tumble (STR, DC 13) — Grapple enemies (damage + stagger), workout for HP
🪄 Nimble Fingers (DEX, DC 14) — Pickpocket in combat/town, disarm traps
📖 Folk & Fable (INT, DC 13) — Identify enemy weaknesses, gain XP, find maps
🦅 Eagle Eye (INT, DC 11) — Scan rooms to reveal hidden items
🗣️ Fast Talk (INT, DC 12) — Charm travelers for gold, rarely talk down enemies
🥷 Sneak (DEX, DC 13) — Move silently, avoid enemies on your next move
🌿 Wilderness Wit (INT, DC 12) — Forage for food/water (heal HP + MP)

Click a skill button below the action bar to attempt a check. Combat skills work in and out of combat; non-combat skills are disabled during fights.

🗺️ Exploration

Move: Click N/S/E/W on the direction pad, or type move [direction]
Eagle Eye: Use the Eagle Eye skill to scan a room and reveal hidden items.
Rest: Recover 30% max HP and MP (once per zone — must explore further to rest again).
Find Town: Type "find town" or "town" for directions to the nearest settlement.
Taverns: Stay the night for 3g (full restore, once per town).
Maps: Buy a Hand-drawn Map (~20g) or Regional Atlas (~50g) from town shops. Click "View" in inventory to open an interactive fantasy-style map showing your charted landmarks, connected by paths, with towns labeled and a compass rose.
Biomes: See the Biomes section below for details on each region's difficulty and enemies.

💾 Saving & Loading

Save: Click 💾 Save or type save. Saves to a timestamped JSON file.
Load: From Saves panel (in-game) or main page. Full state restored.
Delete: Remove old saves from the Saves panel.

💀 Death

Resurrect: Return to Crossroads at 50% HP. Lose 50% gold and 5% XP. All gear, inventory, and discovered rooms kept.
Load Save: Restore from any previous save point.
New Adventure: Start completely fresh.

● Legendary — Ultimate gear (e.g., Staff of Stars +25 ATK, Celestial Plate DEF 18, Thunder Glaive +22)

🎵 Audio

Layered audio system using Web Audio API — procedural ambient loops, MP3 tracks for combat/town/boss music, and procedural combat SFX.

Biome Ambient: Procedural loops unique to each biome — sweeping wind and birds (forest), murky drones (swamp), stone echoes (cave), howling winds (mountain), creaking FM (ruins), detuned pads (magical).
Town Music: MP3 ambient track with layered SFX (fountain, birds, chatter). Crossfades in on town entry.
Combat Music: MP3 battle theme at 0.65× volume. Starts on combat entry, crossfades on exit.
Boss Music: Dramatic MP3 boss theme at 1.3× volume. Plays for tier-4 encounters only.
Volume Control: Tap the 🔊 speaker icon for the volume slider (0–100%, persisted to localStorage).
Combat SFX: Procedural one-shots — heavy thumps (hit), soft swooshes (miss), shimmering chimes (spells).

💡 Audio starts muted by default. Tap 🔊 to enable, then adjust volume to your preference.

Introduction

OuchRPG is a free online text-based role-playing game operated by Brainbox. This privacy policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding your data.

What Information We Collect

OuchRPG collects only the data necessary to provide its core functionality:

Account information: When you log in using Google or Facebook, we receive your display name, email address, and profile picture from that provider. We do not collect passwords or other credentials from these providers.
Game saves: Your game progress (character stats, inventory, explored rooms, equipment, etc.) is stored locally in your browser session. When you log in, you can also save to the cloud so you can access your game from any device.
Usage data: We may collect basic server logs (IP address, browser type, referrer, timestamps) for security and debugging purposes. These logs are retained for up to 90 days.

How We Use Your Information

We use the collected information to:

Provide and maintain the OuchRPG service
Authenticate your identity and manage your account
Store and sync your game saves across devices
Improve the game and fix bugs
Ensure the security and integrity of our platform

We do not sell your personal data. We do not use third-party analytics or advertising trackers.

Third-Party Services

OuchRPG uses the following third-party services:

Google Sign-In: If you log in with Google, your data is handled according to Google's Privacy Policy.
Facebook Login: If you log in with Facebook, your data is handled according to Facebook's Data Policy.

We only request the minimum permissions needed for authentication (name, email, profile picture). We do not access your social media posts, friends list, or other personal content.

Data Storage

Your game save data is stored in a SQLite database on our servers. Local game sessions use PHP sessions stored server-side. We implement industry-standard measures to protect your data, including access controls and session token encryption.

Your Rights

You have the right to:

Access the data we hold about you
Correct inaccurate information
Delete your account and all associated data
Export your game save data

Data Deletion

To request deletion of your account and all associated data, email us at hello@archanium.net. We will process deletion requests within 30 days. You can also delete your cloud saves at any time from within the game.

Cookies

OuchRPG uses a single session cookie (ouchrpg_session) to maintain your logged-in state. This cookie is HTTP-only and expires after 30 days of inactivity. PHP session cookies are also used for game play sessions. No tracking or analytics cookies are used.

Children's Privacy

OuchRPG is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have inadvertently collected such information, please contact us at hello@archanium.net.

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will reflect when changes were made.
